Some businesses heat up during the summer period, but most see a major go-slow.  Everybody takes some time out and generally, it’s not until September that there is a big business push.

My view is the downtime isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to update your skills, marketing, websites, social channels and anything else that can drive your business forward post the summer period.

Here are a few suggestions for you to make the most of the summer months for you and your business.

Update Your Social Media Channels & Website

Spend some time updating all of your social media channels and website.  Give yourself a bit of a social media audit! If you use LinkedIn, make sure it’s up to date with your latest skills and experiences.  If you use Facebook and Twitter, take some to review your bio and descriptions.  Add services and products to your Facebook biz page if you have one and generally make sure everything is up-to-date.  Go through your website.  Add some new customer testimonials to keep things fresh. When you have downtime writing new content seems a lot easier.  When was the last time you checked your website analytics to find out your most visited pages?

Attend Your Own Summer School

As a small business, there is always something to learn.  I am transitioning to a new email software platform in September.  The summer is the perfect opportunity to get to grips with the new platform before jumping in and releasing it.  If there is something you need to learn more about, the summer is the perfect time to add to grow your skills and learn something new.

Have a Summer-clean!

Is your desk or workspace a mess? Mine is! Clutter is a source of distraction.  The summer is the perfect time to clear the decks and get your workspace ready to roll for September.  It will help to de-clutter your mind and get you ready to focus.

Clear out your inbox

You’re on a roll – you’ve just cleared up your desk, keep up the momentum and clear out your inbox! Spend some time organizing the e-clutter too!

Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open

When you break away from the same old routine, this is often the time when new inspiration appears.  This always happens to me.  It could be just the change in routine, trying a new coffee shop, catching up with old friends, a walk somewhere different.  You never know where a new idea will come from, so keep your eyes and ears open for some new inspiration.

Is Your Marketing Summer Ready?

Be creative this summer.  Have you incorporated summer themes into your marketing? Think of creative ways you can bring into your blog posts, newsletters and social channels.  Give your audience good summer content.  Summer reading lists, recipes, top tips for the summer holiday juggle with children.  Write a blog and pull snippets of info out of it to trickle out to your audience.  Remember, it doesn’t always have to be about business to engage your audience especially over the summer period.

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule!

There are so many scheduling tools out there like Hootsuite or Buffer.  Use them! Go through the pain of scheduling your summer content so all you need to do is engage with that content.   It’s important you don’t disappear and disconnect with your audience over the summer period.  Being consistent with your content is critical.  You can also use Facebook’s native scheduling tool to share content.

Newsletters or email campaigns are a really great way of keeping in contact.  You can schedule these too.  Even short, simple emails out to your audience is a good way to let them know you are still thinking of them.

Revisit Your Goals

The summer point is a perfect opportunity to look at your business goals or indeed write them if you haven’t yet already! When our brains are more relaxed it gives us more time to think and it’s a perfect time to reassess those goals.

Connect with Your Contacts

When things get busy, it’s so easy to fall out touch with the people we have connected within the first half of the year.  A simple email, phone call or zoom call might yield something valuable.  My challenge to you is to reach out to somebody you haven’t had contact with for a while and start a conversation.

Take a Break!

We work round the clock for the rest of the year.  Whether you take an overseas holiday, intend to take the summer off or just set aside some time each day, remember it’s so important to recharge your batteries to recoup energy and to come up with fresh ideas to stay focused and motivated for the rest of the year. It’s hard to truly switch off when you run a business – just limit your online to respond to critical stuff.  The rest of the time, take a break!
